The Orange County Flyers of the independent professional Golden Baseball League (GBL) have announced that they have agreed to terms with former major league infielder Damian Jackson. Traded to Cincinnati and then San Diego, he was the regular shortstop and then second baseman for that team from 1999 - 2001. The speedy infielder, with over 130 stolen bases in the majors, remained in the big leagues through the 2006 season before becoming a free agent. Last year he played in the east coast-based independent Atlantic League.

    AQUI LA NOTA"
Vipers Set Pre-Season Roster and Training Camp Schedule

The Calgary Vipers today announced their training camp schedule for the upcoming Golden Baseball League season. Players will report for medicals on Friday, May 8 and will open their fifth training camp on Saturday, May 9 at Foothills Stadium.

The Vipers will play their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Capitals, in four pre-season games. The first two games will be in Fort McMurray, Alberta, the home of Vipers pitcher Reggie Rivard. The Snakes and Caps will meet on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 with all proceeds going to the Fort McMurray Minor Baseball Association.

“Over the years Edmonton and Calgary have definitely exposed the pro product in our province”, said Vipers Director of Baseball Operations Peter Young. “We’ve played in Lethbridge, Red Deer and Camrose in previous seasons and now are happy to venture north for the first time. Numerous youngsters who are coached by Reggie Rivard have made the trip to Edmonton and Calgary to watch him play; now it’s time for us to return the favour”.

The two teams will then play home and home pre-season games in Calgary on May 18 and Edmonton on May 19 before starting the regular season two nights later. Coincidentally the Battle of Alberta will then be on hold for two full months as the teams don’t meet in regular season action until the second half of the schedule.

The Vipers have also completed their training camp roster with twenty-nine players either signed or attending on non-roster invitations. The team rounded out their starting nine last weekend acquiring power hitting outfielder Terry Mermer from the team that edged them in the Championship Series in California last September. Mermer, a late acquisition by Gary Carter last August hit 5 home runs in only 15 games with Orange County and slugged another 3 in their eight playoff games. His addition gives field manager Morgan Burkhart four outstanding outfielders for 2009. Mermer joins Drew Miller (20 HR), Mark Okano (19 HR) and GBL Rookie of the Year Colin Moro. Burkhart will be able to alternate one outfielder in the DH position to guarantee each maximum playing time.

The Vipers infield could also be the teams best defensively in the clubs five year history. Carlos Duncan (11 HR) and Nelson Castro (12 HR) have been perennial Independent League All-Stars. Each has been a former Vipers MVP. Switch hitting second baseman Jorge Mejia (11 HR) was a GBL All-Star in 2008 while first baseman Ivan Reyes hammered 16 long balls for St. George and Laredo in 2008. Add in the seven contributed by workhorse catcher Pat Arlis and you have a batting lineup that combined for 101 home runs in 2008.

“We’ve never been this prepared five weeks before training camp”, added Young. “We’re also waiting to see if Seth Loman sticks with the Chicago White Sox organization in extended spring training. If he becomes available that would add another great offensive threat”. The 22-year old Loman hit 19 home runs in only 60 games with St. George last season. The runner-up to Moro in Rookie of the Year balloting was obtained from St. George in December but almost immediately sold to the White Sox. The Vipers still retain his Independent league playing rights.

On the hill pitching coach Evan Greusel is still considered the Vipers ace but he has some great company in 2009. Playoff phenom Joe Sergent, veteran Hideki Nagasaka, recently signed returning Vipers Dallas Mahan and Reggie Rivard, lefty Frank James and newcomers Alan Webb, Erik Dessau and Zak Blakney also have the ability to start. The return of sidewinder Cody Cillo, newcomer Jake Vose and closer Jon Huizinga gives Greusel more depth than any previous Vipers squad. Left handed knuckleballer Chris Nowlin and side armed rookie Andrew Demott will also be competing for a spot on the team along with two time Viper Phil Sobkow. Lefties Ryan Olson and Jordy Alexander who both finished the 2008 season on the disabled list could also return from off season surgery to battle in training camp.

With the retirement of rookie third baseman Travis Drader former Cracker-Cat infielder Rob Recuenco and three year veteran catcher Kevin Price are expected to round out the position player side of the Vipers roster. They will get training camp pressure from two local products wrapping up their NCAA college careers, infielder Manny Kumar (Grambling State-Okotoks Dawgs) of Calgary and catcher Marshall McDonald (University of Dayton) Red Deer. Last season’s bullpen catcher Dillon O’Krane will also be in camp hoping to crack the lineup.

    2009 Signed Players

    Position Players Pitchers
    C-Pat Arlis Evan Greusel
    3B-Carlos Duncan Joe Sergent
    SS-Nelson Castro Hideki Nagasaka
    2B-Jorge Mejia Reggie Rivard
    1B-Ivan Reyes Frank James
    OF-Drew Miller Alan Webb
    OF-Colin Moro Erik Dessau
    OF-Mark Okano Dallas Mahan
    OF-Terry Mermer Cody Cillo
    UT-Kevin Price Jake Vose
    UT-Rob Recuenco John Huizinga
    Zak Blakney

The Vipers will hold their annual Free Agent Evaluation camp on Saturday, May 9 at Foothills Stadium in conjunction with their Job Fair and Open House.

Tucscon Toros Announce First 17 Players

    KEN BRAZZLE
    Tucson Citizen
Jason Jacome couldn't pass up the opportunity.

The former Rincon/University High School and Pima Community College pitcher has come out of retirement to pitch for the independent Tucson Toros this year.

He was introduced Thursday with his teammates and the coaching staff at Hi Corbett Field.

"I am not out here to try to get back to the big leagues," Jacome, 38, said. "I am here to pitch a little and help the team win, and help some of the younger guys learn some things from me. If I get the opportunity to go somewhere else, I will take it.''

Jacome pitched for the New York Mets, Kansas City and Cleveland in the major leagues. After being released by Cleveland in 1998, he bounced around the minors and the Mexican League for a few seasons. He also played in Japan.

"When I stopped playing, I kinda felt that I was done and had played long enough,'' Jacome said. "Once I found out about the Toros coming here, there was a chance for me to play in my hometown. There is an opportunity for me to get out and let my kids see me play.''

Jacome has four children ranging from 7 months to 7 years old.

Tucson manager Tim Johnson said Jacome's experience and knowledge will be valuable.

"He's going to do nothing but help,'' Johnson said. "He knows how to help younger kids and he's going to bring some big-league experience when he's out there. He's going to be a big voice on the bench. I am excited about that.''

Jacome is anxious to see the skill level of the Golden Baseball League players.

"The caliber of the players I've seen are at least Double A or Triple A,'' Jacome said. "There are a lot of good arms pitchingwise.''

Jacome went 10-18 in 106 career games in the majors, with a 5.34 ERA.

It has been 11 years since Jacome last pitched in the big leagues. He still has the confidence that he can get back there.

"Even when I got done playing, I felt like I could pitch in the big leagues," he said. "I still feel like that today. It's just a matter of opportunity. You never know."

    New Toros revealed

The Toros introduced 17 players, including four former major leaguers, Thursday.

Nine pitchers and eight position players were featured at a news conference at Hi Corbett Field.

The ex-big leaguers are pitchers Jacome, Lorenzo Barcelo, Emiliano Fruto and infielder Jim Rushford.

Others on the roster are Blake Eager, Danny Greenwalt, Ronny Lopez, Eric Schaler, Mark Rosen, Toby Nordman, Dustin Yount, Skip Adams, Frank Gonzalez, Luis Apodaca, Dylan Parzyk, Curt Miaso and Armando Moran.

Moran graduated from Rincon in 2005. Yount is the son of two-time American League MVP Robin Yount.

DE LOS YUMA SCORPIONS LEÍ UNA NOTA ESTILO EDGAR ACEVEDO, DE UNA FORMA MUY RIMBOMBANTE ANUNCIAN LA CONTRATACION DE UN LANZADOR JAPONES FENOMENO DE 21 AÑOS
    AQUI LA NOTA:
Japanese Pitching Phenom Yosuke Kawaguchi Signs With Yuma Scorpions
Yomiuri Giants Pitcher Opts for Free Agency to Sign and Be Showcased in U.S.

Yuma, AZ. March 30, 2009 – The Yuma Scorpions of the independent professional Golden Baseball League (GBL) have announced that they have agreed to terms with highly regarded Japanese pitcher Yosuke Kawaguchi. The young pitcher, 21, has opted for free agency from the Yomiuri Giants to sign with Yuma to showcase his abilities in the U.S. to better gain the attention of major league organizations.

"I'm excited to have this young man as part of the pitching staff for the Scorpions," said Yuma Manager Mike Marshall. "He has been considered one of the top young pitchers in Japan since high school and will be exciting for our fans to watch. Probably the best Japanese player we've had in Yuma since the Yakult Swallows discontinued their use of our facility for spring training."

Kawaguchi, 21, 6-2, 190, was the 96th player taken overall in the 2005 draft out of Yoshikan High School in Ohita, Japan. Selected in the 5th round by the Fukuoka Soft Bank Hawks, he developed in their system before going to the perennial powerhouse Yomiuri Giants in 2008. Unable to break into their veteran-laden pitching staff despite a 1.69 E.R.A. in the minor league just a level below, he opted for free agency to improve his opportunities. Represented by well known Japanese player agent Jay Shindo, he selected the Golden League for it's track record of having players signed by major league organizations and the Yuma Scorpions for their facilities and the community's longstanding support and affinity for Japanese players.

"From the Japan Samurai Bears in our first year, to signing former Japanese big league players such as Masashi Chikazawa and Michinao Yamamura and moving Japanese players to major league organizations such as Keisuke Ueno we continue to look to ways to partner with players, teams, and leagues from Japan," said GBL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "This is a good example of a continued strengthening of that relationship as Nippon Professional Baseball players are now specifically selecting the GBL to advance their careers."
